This medal is one of the iconic works in the history of the modern medal. This medal was created for the combined 1900 Paris World's Fair and second modern Olympics by master medallist Jules-Clément Chaplain. This example was awarded to HOCHGESAND.
Jules-Clément Chaplain (1839-1909) was born in Mortagne/France. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1857, studying sculpture under Jouffroy and medals under Oudine. In 1863 he received the Grand Prix de Rome for medal-engraving and worked in Rome from 1864 to 1868. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1863. Chaplain received a first-class medal in 1878. In 1881 his status as one of the leading French medallists was recognized by his election to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1895 he was selected for the position of Art Director at the Sèvres Manufactory. Chaplain was appointed Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1900.
