JAB-08 SMALL STAR CONFEDERATIO CENT Copper #2
|
27mm - 40 struck
Dies engraved in 1863. They were sold to Dr. Edwards, who issued restrikes and sold them as genuine examples. After Edward's death, the dies passed to Edward Cogan, who sold them back to Bolen. Bolen claims to have destroyed them to prevent further restrikes from being issued.
This is the third colonial fascimile issued by Bolen. The stars are a bit smaller and the rays a bit longer than those of JAB-7. The legend on the obverse translates "America Hostile to Tyrants". Bolen copies can be distinguished from originals by his secret mark, a small dot in the Y of TYRANNIS.
An AU example from the Q.D. Bowers collection was sold by Hayden for $1000 in Sept. 2010. An Unc. example sold in the 5/2006 Stack sale for $1438 (lot 567).
