JAB-29 DANIEL WEBSTER MEDAL Silver
|
25mm - 2 struck by Bolen
Both dies were cut in 1867 and sold to J.W. Kline in 1872. They are currently in the ANS collection.
According to the AJN list, Bolen struck 3 examples in Silver. Bolen states he struck two. Kline also struck a few examples in this metal. It is fairly easy to tell the restrikes from the originals. The originals are 2.2 to 3.0 mm thick. The restrikes are only 1.5 to 2.0 mm in thickness.
The example pictured is a Kline restrike, graded MS-63 by PCGS. It sold for $1200 in their March 2020 sale, lot 99. The same piece was graded Au in their January 2011 Sale. One has to go back to 1984 to find another sales record for a Silver JAB-29 piece.
