JAB-10 HIGLEY COPPER FASCIMILE Tin
|
28mm - Unlisted in Musante
Possibly Unique
The dies for this issue were cut in 1864. Bolen sold the dies to Dr. Edwards who issued a number of restrikes. They then passed from Edwards to Cogan. They were then defaced by either Cogan or possibly Bolen himself. Bolen was concerned that the dies were being used to strike examples that were being passed off as genuine. The Higley dies were the last Colonial ones that he sold. See JAB M/E-13 for an example struck with the defaced obverse die. It is probable that this Tin example was struck by Edwards.
The Bolen copies have six dots on the reverse crown bands, the originals have only five. On the obverse, the Bolen copies have a secret dot within the C of Pance. The circle around the deer is complete on the Bolen copy, while it is not on the original.
In the past 20 years, the Medal pictured is the only example in Tin that I have seen offered for sale. It was acquired in a 2002 Early American Numismatics auction. If others exist, they are extremely rare.
